Majors with Additional Requirements
These majors are more competitive for admission, so they have additional admission requirements.
Architecture
- Admission to Architecture is competitive and requires an additional School of Architecture application. The secondary Architecture application can be started upon submitting the undergraduate admissions application.
- Architecture only allows admission starting in the fall semester- transfer students should plan to apply in the fall prior to transferring.

- Enrolled students who are not offered admission to the Architecture major may reapply to the program and a change of major for a future fall semester.
Art & Graphic Design
- Admission to Art & Graphic Design is competitive and requires an additional application with digital portfolio submission.
- Upon gaining general admission to the university, students will be able to complete either the Art or Graphic Design application.
- Art & Graphic Design only allows admission starting in the fall semester- transfer students should plan to apply the fall prior to transferring.

- Enrolled students who are not offered admission to the Art or Graphic Design majors may reapply to the program and a change of major for a future fall semester.
Business
- Business requires a 2.7 or higher cumulative GPA.
- Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in their most recent attempt of any business progression course.
- The Business progression courses do NOT have to be complete upon transfer, but they are recommended.
- To be considered for a College of Business major for a future term, students must: complete 24 semester hours at UNC Charlotte, achieve a minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA, and earn a grade of C or better in the Business Progression Courses completed, with no more than 2 attempts per course at UNC Charlotte.
Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence
- Computer Science requires a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA and a grade of C or higher in all previously attempted Computer Science courses.
- Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in college-level algebra, equivalent to UNC Charlotte MATH 1100, prior to transferring.
- To be considered for a Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence major for a future term, students must successfully complete 12 semester hours including Introduction to Computer Science I and Calculus I at UNC Charlotte and achieve a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
Engineering
- Engineering requires a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA and completion of college-level Calculus I or higher prior to transferring
- Mechanical Engineering requires a 2.8 or higher cumulative GPA and completion of college-level Calculus I or higher prior to transferring
- Calculus course must be equivalent to UNC Charlotte MATH 1241
- To be considered for an Engineering major for a future term, you should consult with an academic advisor to select appropriate coursework. When you have successfully completed those courses with the required GPA, you can request a change of major.
Engineering Technology
- Engineering Technology (Civil, Electromechanical, and Mechanical) requires a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA and completion of college-level Precalculus or higher prior to transferring.
- Fire and Safety Engineering Technology and Construction Management are exempt from the additional admission requirements. However, if a student is completing the aligning AAS degree, then a minimum 2.5 GPA in the AAS degree is required.
- To be considered for an Engineering Technology major for a future term, you should consult with an academic advisor to select appropriate coursework. When you have successfully completed those courses with the required GPA, you can request a change of major.
Music
- Once you have applied to the university, you must schedule an audition.
- Your audition will provide an opportunity for you to display your abilities, meet our faculty, and ask questions about the Department of Music.
- Enrolled students who are not offered admission to the Music major may reapply to the program and a change of major for a future fall semester.
Nursing
- Students applying for nursing are initially reviewed for admission into pre-nursing and are required to have a cumulative 3.0 GPA, and a “B” or better in the following Nursing prerequisites within their first two attempts of each course:
- Chemistry I with lab
- Chemistry II with lab
- Nutrition
- Human Anatomy & Physiology I with lab
- Human Anatomy & Physiology II with lab
- Microbiology with lab
- Human Growth and Development
- Students with multiple grades below B in nursing prerequisite courses may not be eligible to declare the nursing major in the future. For more information about your eligibility, please contact nursing-programs@charlotte.edu.
