Safety and Security
At Charlotte, safety is a top priority.
We are committed to providing a safe learning and living environment for your student. With thoughtful collaboration between our on-campus Police Department, Emergency Management, University Communications, Housing & Residence Life, the Student Health Center and many other resources, we support your Niner while they make Charlotte their home away from home.
Campus Safety Resources
Niner Alerts
NinerAlerts are used to notify the campus community when an emergency, incident or inclement weather may threaten safety and operations. NinerAlerts are sent through the following methods:
- Text message
- Digital screen take-over
- The LiveSafe App
- On-campus alert sirens.
Families can sign up for NinerAlerts via email or opt-in to text messages. To learn more, visit emergency.charlotte.edu.
Police & Public Safety
Our police officers are certified by the State of North Carolina and have attended an extensive police-training program. They all have full police powers on campus and are on duty 24/7 in cars, on bicycles and on foot. Officers can be contacted with the following methods:
- By dialing 911 from any campus telephone line
- By calling 704-687-2200 from a cellphone or off-campus phone
- By contacting them through the LiveSafe mobile app
- By pressing the emergency button on an emergency blue light pole
Emergency Blue Light Poles
Our network of approximately 300 emergency blue light poles ensure students can easily reach Police & Public Safety while on campus. Pressing the emergency button initiates a call with our Police Telecommunicators who will send the necessary support to your location. These emergency phones can also be used to request safety escorts, report suspicious persons or activities or report any other concerns while on campus.
The LiveSafe App
This free app connects students to safety resources directly through their mobile device. Downloading the app enables students to:
- Quickly call or text Police & Public Safety
- Reference a list of emergency contacts
- Anonymously report tips with photos or videos
- Track the locations of campus shuttles
- Conduct virtual “safe-walks” with family members, friends or roommates
Annual Security Report
The Charlotte Annual Security Report is required of all universities by federal law and discusses crime statistics, procedures for reporting suspicious or criminal activity, security, police authority, crime prevention strategies, university policies on substance abuse and sexual offenses, workplace violence and fire safety. You may request a hardcopy by sending an email to police@uncc.edu or by calling (704) 687-8300. For more information, please visit the UNC Charlotte Police & Public Safety website.
Campus Safety and Security Committee
This committee develops an annual comprehensive plan to assure the physical security of UNC Charlotte’s campus. In addition to developing the plan and monitoring our progress toward our objectives, the Committee advises the Chancellor on recommended policy changes that could make the campus a safer environment.
One initiative, the Campus Safety Walk, brings together faculty, staffand students to walk around campus to identify current safety issues.

Additional Safety Information
COVID-19 Response
The health and wellbeing of our campus community are our top priorities, therefore we make decisions grounded in facts and informed by the guidance of public health experts. For University-related COVID-19 updates, visit ninernationcares.charlotte.edu.
Alcohol Policy
We acknowledge that alcohol abuse is a concern on college campuses today, and we know that you want your student to make intelligent decisions during their time at Charlotte. Students struggling with substance use are encouraged to engage with the Charlotte Recovery Program which includes recovery-informed therapy, group recovery meetings and other forms of support throughout their recovery.
Student Conduct
We encourage you and your student to review our primary codes of conduct: the UNC Charlotte Code of Student Academic Integrity and the UNC Charlotte Code of Student Responsibility. The University has also enacted a program for the prevention of the use of illegal drugs and alcohol abuse, as well as a policy for smoking on campus. All Charlotte students are obligated to be familiar with these codes and to conduct themselves in accordance with the standards set forth.
The Noble Niner
Charlotte students are also expected to embody The Noble Niner code, which solidifies our high standard of morals, principles, and integrity that all students should uphold to bolster the growing reputation of excellence at Charlotte.
